About Orange:Orange Homes for Sale

Orange, California, with a population of 136,416 at the last census, is a city that cares about its history. Of the 34 incorporated cities in Orange County, it is one of the few that chose to preserve its turn-of-the-century and early 20th century homes as part of its historic Old Town District. Old Town Orange is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and it is a favorite setting as a film location.

Orange was incorporated on April 6, 1871 as Richland, but the name was changed two years later when its application for a post office was turned down due to an existing California city of the same name. Rumor has it that the name "Orange" was settled on by city founders after a game of poker; it was nearly called "Olive."

Orange's first taste of prosperity came in the 1880's, when the citrus boom flourished in the area, bringing recognition and development to many of its cities. It progressed slowly but steadily until the mid-1950's when the new Interstate highway system opened up the area and brought in a new influx of residents and industry. The city is divided into sections known as North, South, Central, and East Orange, each having their own character and diversity.

Today's Orange is a lively and charming city that continues to grow as it incorporates surrounding tracts of land and their residents. It has a thriving commercial district and is home to a large, outdoor entertainment and shopping plaza called the Outlets at Orange, featuring shops such as Sak's, Ann Taylor, and Old Navy, as well as the Van's Skate Park, a state-of-the-art AMC theater, and a Lucky-Strike bowling center. Places of interest include the Orange County Zoo, Santiago Oaks Regional Park and Wildlife Sanctuary, and the historic Lewis Ainsworth House, which is also a museum.

Close at hand are the mountains, lakes, beaches, and open spaces of Orange County, as well as fine dining, night life, family amusements. The cities of Riverside and Los Angeles are a metaphorical hop, skip, and jump away.

Housing in Orange is very reasonable compared to other cities in the county. The median sales price is $430,000 for a nice-sized, three bedroom home. The city is served by the Orange Unified School District and contains three public high schools, two private high schools, McPherson Magnet School, Santiago Charter Middle School, and a number of neighborhood elementary schools. It is also home to Chapman University and Santiago Canyon College.

Orange's temperature is kept moderate to warm throughout the year due to its proximity to cool, Pacific breezes, which makes a great place to enjoy strolls through its quaint neighborhoods and its many parks and lakeside hiking areas. It is a charming place with a close, hometown feel that provide access to all the amenities that a progressive city offers. Orange is a city you will fall in love with.
