About Canyon Lake:
Canyon Lake is like living in a resort year-round. This upscale development is one of only five gated towns in California, and it is a laid-back, outdoorsy place that nearly 10,000 residents call home. The city is fully self-governed and is located in Riverside County, nestled between Sun City and Lake Elsinore. It was even featured in a BBC documentary called "United Gates of America" and a book of area scenery released last year by local resident Dennis Bickers called "Images of Canyon Lake."
The lake was created when the Railroad Canyon Dam was built in 1927 by Temescal Water Company as a means of creating a water supply for nearby towns on the railroad's path. It was inhabited almost entirely by a small, family-owned fishing camp and supply store until 1968, when the Corona Land Company began construction of a planned community of 5,000 lots surrounding what was then known as Railroad Canyon Lake, a nod to its early beginnings. The city was officially incorporated as Canyon Lake in 1990.
The neighborhoods are a mixture of upscale, single-family homes, town homes, and condos, all surrounding a beautiful lake with 14.9 miles of shoreline. Though it is an affluent city with a median household income of $84,122, real estate in Canyon Lake is very affordable, falling slightly below the state median home sales price of $384,200.
The crime rate is exceedingly low, as would be expected, and emergency services are provided by Riverside County Sheriff's Department and the Riverside County Fore Department. However, inside the gated portions of the city a private security company, Allied Barton Security, provides protection to residents.
Canyon Lake students are served by the Lake Elsinore Unified School District and higher education is close at hand with the presence of Mt. San Jacinto College in Menifee, University of California's Riverside Campus, and four separate campuses of California State University within a fifty-mile radius.
In addition to the many amenities of the surrounding cities and counties, Canyon Lake residents are an active bunch within their own gates. The community was first envisioned as a weekend retreat for retirees and families, but residents and their guests are treated to resort-type living every day of the week. Activities include golf courses, a first-rate equestrian center, beautiful beaches, fishing, and boating. There are also plenty of walking, biking, and hiking trails throughout the pristine setting. Small business and shopping areas are scattered throughout the community.
The areas and cities surrounding Canyon Lake are largely urban and provide plenty of opportunity for employment and additional recreation for the citizens. All in all, Canyon Lake is a small, neighborly place to live and raise a family or wile away your golden years. It has everything you could dream of inside the gates and it is close to everything you could possibly need on the outside of them.
