Irvine, California is planned city located in Orange County. Development began in the 1960's and the city was officially incorporated on December 28, 1971. The current population is nearly 230,000 and is expected to grow due to planned expansion and annexation of unincorporated areas adjacent to the city.
The city was originally the site of a sheep ranch acquired by the city's namesake, John Irvine, in 1878. The land passed through generations of the family and was eventually parceled out for development by the family trust after the death of Myford Irvine in 1959. The multitude of neighborhoods, industrial complexes, ranches, and college campuses were officially gathered under one banner in the early 1970's and the city has grown exponentially ever since.
Modern Irvine is a city that has it all: state-of-the-art technology, a high standard of living, forward-thinking environmental and transportation programs, and a rich cultural history. One can expect to find all of the arts, culture, and entertainment you would want from a progressive college town and it still has a small-town, neighborly feel that is rare in a city of its size.
The layout was carefully planned into six-street grids and sectioned into neighborhoods that are referred to as villages. Housing in Irvine is in the upper levels for some villages, but affordable housing is available. The median price for a single-family home is $575,000, but can be found in the lower $300,000 range in many of the villages. Some of the more popular neighborhoods are Woodbridge, Lower Peters Canyon, and El Camino real.
The main industries are tech-related and Irvine is also home to a number of major centers of higher learning, including University of California's Irvine campus, Concordia University, University of Southern California's Orange County Center, and a Pepperdine University campus, among others.
Aside from its close proximity to all of the advantages and sites of Southern California, Irvine has many places of interest close to home. Residents and visitors can enjoy great entertainment at the Musical Theater Village, visit the Irvine Museum to learn about the city's history, find great art and antiques, fine dining, and more. There are a multitude of well-maintained parks and recreation areas, as well as preserved green spaces and national parks nearby.
The city of Irvine has been recognized nationally as a top U.S city on several occasions, and with good reason. The quality of its schools, housing, working environment and visual appeal make it a great place to live. Irvine was chosen as the fourth best place to live in the United States by CNNMoney.com in 2008 and was voted by Business Week as the 5th best city nationally in 2011; it also has the lowest crime rate for any city with a population over 100,000, nationwide. These and all of the other factors mentioned make Irvine, California a great place to call home.
