Costa Mesa, which means 'coastal tableland' in Spanish, is a mid-sized city located in Orange County, California. The land has been inhabited since the Indians first settled on this beautiful land near the Santa Ana River, and many artifacts can be found in the area to this day. The city has since seen a few incarnations and name changes, from its origin as Vallejo de Santa Ana to Harper, a stop-over for cattle ranchers, to its rechristening Costa Mesa in 1920, when it became an agricultural center.

Today this community of a little over 110,000 residents has gone from sleepy rural community to a major county-wide focal point for commerce, industry, and the performing arts; Costa Mesa is bustling with activity and plenty of things to see and do. The first boost to the local economy after the Great Depression came with the addition of the Santa Ana Army Air Base during the second World War. The military inhabitants decided to remain after the war and raise their families; the area has continued to grow and prosper ever since.

Though the base is now closed, the land has come to good use as the current site of Costa Mesa City Hall and the Orange County Fairgrounds, which are adjacent to the famed Pacific Amphitheater. The fairgrounds host one of the largest fairs in the state, drawing more than a million visitors each year. The former base is also home to Southern California College, Orange Coast College, a local high school, and several housing developments.

Places of interest include the original, restored Diego Sepulveda Adobe, which is a historic landmark, the South Coast Repertory Theater, Orange County Performing Arts Center, the Opera Pacific, and the Orange County Museum of Art. Costa Mesa also offers fine and casual dining and shopping spots galore including the famed South Coast Plaza Mall.

There are also plenty of neighborhood parks, open spaces, as well as the beautiful and scenic Fairview Park, which offers riding and hiking trails, a model glider flying area, and on the third weekend of the month, free model train rides. Residents and visitors get all of the this in an city that is a centralized location to the rest of the attractions of Orange County and the Southern coast of California.

The community is served by its own emergency services system and has 26 public schools, several private schools, and a great public library system. Housing in the area lists from about $225,000 to over $4,000,000, depending on the location, and ranges from rural to suburban. The median sales price is $485,000 and housing consists of predominately single-family, owner-occupied homes that average four bedrooms.

Costa Mesa is a busy commercial and industrial mecca disguised as a laid-back, family-oriented rural and suburban center. There is plenty to see and do there, and residents also have convenient access to beautiful scenery, beaches, and larger urban areas, such as Los Angeles.
