About Lake Elsinore:

Lake Elsinore Homes for Sale

Lake Elsinore is an older city with a history dating back to the early 1800's, first as a watering stop along the Southern Immigrant Trail and later as a mail depot along the Butterfield Overland Mail route. The original Manriquez adobe that housed the post office still stands near the northern edge of the lake and is a historic site.

The city was officially incorporated on April 9, 1888, originally as part of part of San Diego County, and then later annexed into Riverside County after its creation. The lake for which the city is named derived its name from the Danish city Elsinore, from "Hamlet," which is its sister city. Lake Elsinore is the largest freshwater lake in the state of California, covering more than 3,000 square acres.

The city became a tourist destination in the late 1800's due to the discovery of mineral springs near the lake. Another registered landmark, the original Crescent Bath House, stands in the historic section of downtown Lake Elsinore. Other early industries that helped the city grow were mining and agriculture.

Due to its large area, which is nearly 42 square miles, the modern city of Lake Elsinore, with a current population of just over 52,000, is divided into eleven districts, each with its own distinct history and character. Among them are the Business District, Ballpark, Historic, Lake Elsinore Hills, and Country Club heights; the character of most can be derived from their names.

The climate is typical of the area in its dry, hot summers and mild, wet winters, and it is a great place to live or visit for those who love the outdoors. Residents can enjoy water sports on the lake, camping at one of the many lakeside campgrounds, or hiking and bird watching at the nearby Cleveland National Forest. Those who are into more extreme sports can join others for skydiving, mountain biking, and hang-gliding at designated spots in and around the beautiful Ortega Mountains.

The city itself offers everything residents could hope for. The Historic downtown area has plenty of cultural sites and is a must-see for anyone. You can also find great shopping, fine and casual dining, museums, and entertainment venues. Lake Elsinore is also home to the San Diego Padres farm team, the Lake Elsinore Storm, and the AFL's Banning-Elsinore Eagles; the Stadium District is, of course, the location of their Lake Elsinore Diamond Stadium. It is also close to Los Angeles and other major urban centers, as well as major theme parks and beaches.

Lake Elsinore homes for sale are very reasonably priced. A beautiful, four-bedroom, single family home on an over-sized lot lists in the $299,000 - $349,000 range and up. The area is served by the Riverside County emergency services and sheriff's department, and it has its own first-rate public school system. Secondary education is close at hand with the location of Mount San Jacinto Community College.

If you are looking for a home in a beautiful, modern city that is steeped in history, affordable, and surrounded by nature and culture, Lake Elsinore is the place to hang your hat.
