Mission Viejo, California

Mission Viejo is a large, picturesque city with a suburban feel that's located in southern Orange County. It's the second-largest planned community in the country, and the largest in the state of California, with an area of 18.1 square miles and a population of just over 100,000. Due to the rolling hills and other difficult topological features, it was initially thought to be impossible to develop on this tract of land that was home to sheep and cattle ranchers for so many years. 

Urban planner Donald Bren crafted the original design for the community after it's purchase by the Mission Viejo Company in 1963. He used the geological features to their best advantage by creating roadways that wafted throughout the winding valleys, with the sprawling homes dotting the hillsides; it's a city that fits perfectly into it's surroundings. Except for the addition of Saddleback College and man-made Lake Mission Viejo, the community remains largely unchanged from it's original plans.

Industry

Though the community is mainly residential, there are businesses and retail outlets scattered throughout the area. The main employment opportunities are in education and health care. The Mission Hospital is the largest in the county, and it serves as the regions only trauma center. Other major employers include Caldwell Banker and Unisys.

Mission Viejo's proximity to major urban centers in Southern California makes for an easy commute to a variety of industries. It's also convenient to institutes of higher learning such as the University of California's Irvine campus, Chapman College, and California State University's Fullerton campus. 

Lifestyle

Sometimes referred to as 'the hub of Orange County,' the atmosphere in Mission Viejo is pure Southern California at its finest. It was voted the safest city in America in an FBI crime statistics survey, and as one of the nation's best cities by Money Magazine. It was also voted the safest city in California and the third safest city in the nation by CQ Press. 

The community is spread out over the countryside, and sports are a big part of life. Mission Viejo boasts a world-class diving and swimming program that has produced several Olympic athletes, including Greg Louganis. There are also youth athletic and recreation programs, a large park that consists of numerous baseball and soccer fields, and 45 neighborhood parks. Four competitive soccer teams are located in the city: the Mission Viejo Soccer Club, the Pateadores Soccer Club, the Saddleback United Soccer Club, and the West Coast Futbol Club. 

The homes are mainly upscale condominiums and sprawling, single-family ranch homes that are nestled in the trees. The median price for housing is about $500,000. There are also numerous visually appealing office parks and retail spaces available for sale or rent throughout the city's commercial zones. In Mission Viejo, the neighbors are friendly and welcoming, and the community blends seamlessly with its gorgeous natural surroundings.
