San Juan Capistrano, California
Most notable throughout its history as the final destination for the migration of the famous cliff swallows, San Juan Capistrano is a small city that was built up around the original Mission San Juan Capistrano. Many of the city's dwellings reflect that same Spanish mission architectural style. The city, which was incorporated in 1961, is located in the southern part of Orange County. According to the latest available figures, the population is just over 34,000 and growing; its sister city is Capestrano, Italy, the hometown of the city's namesake, Giovanni da Capistrano.
Industry
San Juan Capistrano has been romanticized in song and literature, and it has some notable history behind it. The city is home to the first winery and vineyard in California. It also contains the state's oldest residential neighborhood, Los Rios, and the oldest continuously used building, the old mission's Serra Chapel.
The citizens have fought hard to put into place measures that protect the heritage and ambiance of San Juan Capistrano, including the adoption in the early 1970s of a General Plan to preserve the historic areas and open spaces against the explosive growth and development of the region. Due to these initiatives, it's one of the few cities in the area that has retained it's central character and sleepy, agricultural nature. About 40 percent of the area is protected from development, and the city actively acquires undeveloped land around its perimeter to safeguard the natural landscaping and trails that define the area. The main industries of San Juan Capistrano are agriculture, ranching, education, and tourism.
Lifestyle
San Juan Capistrano has some of the oldest and most diverse housing in the state of California. The residences range from multi-million dollar gated communities to small adobe-style dwellings, and almost everything in between. It's a city of old-world charm and grace that celebrates its history. One of the best places to walk and explore is in the historic City Center, a picturesque area full of galleries, cafes, and antique shops.
The education in San Juan Capistrano is top-notch. It's served by one public high school, as well as middle and elementary schools. There are also four private Christian prep schools, all but one of which, J. Serra Catholic High School, serve students from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. The University of California's Irvine campus, California State University's Fullerton campus, and Loyola Marymount College are just a short commute away.
There are ample vacation lodgings, walking tours, and points of historical interest. The close proximity to urban centers like San Diego and Los Angeles, as well as the local and regional recreational opportunities, make San Juan Capistrano a great place to live and raise a family.
