Lake Forest, California is a mid-sized city of nearly 78,000 people. Located in the center of Orange County's magnificent Saddleback Valley, it was was first officially settled in 1848 by rancher Don Jose Serrano as Rancho Canada De Los Alisos; it was re-named El Toro in the 1880s, after the bulls that roamed in the original ranch area. It has been voted one of the safest cities in America, ranking at number ten in a survey conducted as recently as 2007.
Its current name is derived from the main geographic features: two man-made lakes that are surrounded by custom-built homes and the forest of eucalyptus trees that's nestled in the area between the four main routes. Since its incorporation in 1991, the city has expanded to include the planned developments of Portola Hills and Foothill Ranch.
Industry
Lake Forest began as an agricultural center. Since the end of the second World War it has become home to a number of industries. It has also attracted a number of commercial, retail, and manufacturing companies that were lured by the pleasant lifestyle and growing population; the former El Toro Marine Air Base is situated just outside of the city limits.
In addition to the sprawling natural landscape and carefully constructed developments, the city has a busy commercial center that hosts such diverse businesses as Black and Decker tools, Wet Seal clothing, Oakley sunglasses, and Panasonic Avionics. A number of celebrities and Olympic athletes makes their home in Lake Forest, including swimmer Kaitlin Sandeno and gold medal-winning skating duo Ekaterina Gordeeva and Ilia Kulik.
Lifestyle
The city motto is "Lake Forest, Where Work and Life Come Together Naturally," and the city planners strive to keep that mission in mind. The ambient beauty of the area, which includes the Whiting Ranch Regional Wilderness Park, the Lake Forest Beach and Tennis Club, and the Sun and Sail Club, provides plenty of opportunities for outdoors enthusiasts to pursue such recreation opportunities as tennis, hiking, and equestrian trails.
The city has 27 neighborhood parks, and housing ranges from million-dollar custom constructions to equestrian estates to modest homes and retirement communities. Events include an annual concert in the main park and the Fourth of July 5k run. Education is well-covered in Lake Forest, with the availability of K - 12 public education facilities; the local high school, El Toro High School, is listed as one of the country's top schools. In addition, there are a number of private schools, preschools, technical, and vocational schools located in and near the city; the University of California, Irvine, Concordia University, and California State's Fullerton campus are also close at hand. Lake Forest contains churches of every denomination, including the famous Saddleback Church, the country's eighth-largest place of worship.
