Lake Forest, California is a mid-sized city of nearly 78,000 people. Located in the center of Orange County's magnificent Saddleback Valley, it was was first officially settled in 1848 by rancher Don Jose Serrano as Rancho Canada De Los Alisos; it was re-named El Toro in the 1880s, after the bulls that roamed in the original ranch area. It has been voted one of the safest cities in America, ranking at number ten in a survey conducted as recently as 2007.
Its current name is derived from the main geographic features: two man-made lakes that are surrounded by custom-built homes and the forest of eucalyptus trees that's nestled in the area between the four main routes. Since its incorporation in 1991, the city has expanded to include the planned developments of Portola Hills and Foothill Ranch.
Lake Forest began as an agricultural center. Since the end of the second World War it has become home to a number of industries. The ambient beauty of the area, which includes the Whiting Ranch Regional Wilderness Park, the Lake Forest Beach and Tennis Club, and the Sun and Sail Club, provides plenty of opportunities for outdoors enthusiasts to pursue such recreation opportunities as tennis, hiking, and equestrian trails.
The city has 27 neighborhood parks, and housing ranges from million-dollar custom constructions to equestrian estates to modest homes and retirement communities.
